Boomers Don’t want to Fall for It!

Oh My!

Have you ever had that, “oh my that was close, It would have been a disaster” moment to a too close slip or fall at your home or somewhere else?  According to the CDC, “Each year, millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact, more than 25% of older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Even worse, falling once doubles your chances of falling again. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults.”

But what can we do?  As Boomers (yes, we are Seniors), what can we do to help prevent or protect ourselves proactively to help reduce or manage these fall risks?

⦁ Exercise with a focus on balance and lower body conditioning
⦁ Awareness of OTC or prescribed Rx that can affect balance
⦁ Update your eyewear and footwear
⦁ Rethink uneven steps, throw rugs and clutter on your floors or areas you are frequently around

Even though we can all help to minimize our own individual fall risks by being a bit more careful.  The facts are that once a Boomer does fall the odds are your health, independence, mobility and life will significantly change.

But too often these accidents, or falls, take place when we are alone and the risk of the passing time that medical care is provided can impact the severity and long-lasting effects of the fall.  So, while there are many actions Boomers can take to prevent a fall there are also actions we can take to proactively safeguard ourselves if we do fall.

What to Do?

For many Boomers, whether they are in good health or struggling a bit, many live alone or spend significant periods of time alone.  Many of us worry about a fall or health emergency when we are alone.  Could a Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) help address these concerns?  Yes.

Today, advanced Mobile Personal Emergency Response Systems (mPERS) provide the most comprehensive protection for Boomers and Seniors.  The Numera® Libris® 2 MPERS, a leader in mPERS is a small, lightweight pendant that users can wear around your neck, wrist or on a belt. It works by using a powerful combination of the latest technologies allowing the wearer to have two-way voice communication directly through the pendant. The Libris 2 mPERS device also has the ability to automatically alert an operator along with your GPS location if an emergency occurs such as a fall, heart attack, stroke or home burglary.

Early PERS found their beginnings in the ’70s (yes, the Boomers finding their groove years) and were useful and met a real need but left many gaps in full, complete, and accurate emergency and fall protection. Like most technology over the past 40+ years, tremendous advancements have brought us PERS that match the demands of today’s active and mobile Boomers.

The Numera® Libris® 2 mPERS offers the industry’s best mobile personal emergency response system with the most accurate fall detection and location services built in. Using the information from various advanced fall algorithm technologies, the Libris 2 pendant enables monitoring operators, responders, and caregivers to know what type of help is needed so they can administer it faster.

With certain falls or health emergencies, there are circumstances that can prevent a person from communicating verbally with first responders. The mPERS is able to transmit an alarm even if the operator cannot speak directly to the wearer, they still can immediately notify the right first responder agencies. Plus, mPERS features integrated GPS technology so the wearer can be located as necessary.
